Reading Insurgence by Frank Viola he shares a thought that has long been a concern of mine as we ‘share the Gospel,’ i.e. that we don’t make enough of the beauty of God and of Jesus. Here are a few excerpts from Viola’s book to stimulate your thinking:
How is love torn in our hearts for Jesus Christ our Lord and King?…There must be an unveiling of His beauty. Thats what happened to the first followers of Jesus. They beheld the splendour of His majesty and they were fascinated by it. And eventually it transformed them. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)…To put it another way, if Jesus hasn’t fully captivated your heart yet, it simply means you’ve not caught a glimpse of His infinite beauty.
Often the proclamation in preaching that I hear is of how wonderful we are, and in effect how blessed God is that we come to him. Maybe it’s time to put more emphasis on Jesus?
