I hadn’t ever met a Grand Imam before. However yesterday I did at the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. He was a great guy, very relaxed and welcoming of three weterners – I went with two Americans. In case you are wondering my understanding is that he is the spiritual leader of Islam in Pakistan.

The mosque here is the second largest in Pakistan with 200,000 people celebrating Eid there each year – in fact until relatively recently, 1986, it was the largest mosque in the world. It was built about 337 years ago over a period of just two years and is made almost entirely of only three basic materials. Right next door to it were the Sikh and Hindu temples We had a great time and I learnt a lot.
